Metallography and image analysis of metallic foams

The current report describes work carried out in the Department of Engineering, University of
Cambridge from June to December 1997. The work is concerned with metallic foams, in particular
image analysis of prepared sections.
Before any sort of analysis can be carried out, suitable images must be obtained. In the present
investigation, section of foam were infiltrated with a dyed epoxy resin in order to clearly
distinguish the cellular structure. A number of features of the foam structure were investigated
including variation in local area fraction over the section, cell specific local area fractions
and cell wall thickness measurements. Techniques for producing the samples and carrying out the
analysis are described.
