Biomechanics of Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a common injury in humans and many animals, especially horses. Once damage ensues, it is difficult to repair. There is a wealth of clinical research in this area, but less from an engineering perspective.

Project Details

Tendons are biological composite structures. The aim of the project, which is at an early stage, is to measure the onset of damage in tendons and relate this to mechanical models of both damage and repair. This will be achieved by novel in-situ measurements of damage, in-vitro tests and micromechanical models (as for example used in engineering composites). It is hoped to establish links with materials science, veterinary and medical collaborators in this area.
