Principal Investigator:
David Cebon
Project Details:
The Transport Research Group has a long history of research into the interaction between
heavy vehicles and road surfaces. Recent work has concentrated on developing deterministic
mathematical models of long-term road degradation due to vehicle loads and environmental
influences (see veh_road.html). These models
are able to explain a number of road degradation mechanisms that were not previously understood.
They have potential use as the next generation of pavement analysis and design tools. There are
many different aspects of road degradation that need to be incorporated into the existing
mathematical models. These include various environmental influences, tyre contact issues and novel
pavement designs. A comprehensive model validation exercise is also needed.
Background Required:
Applicants should have a first class degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering and strong
mathematical and computing abilities.
Funding Source:
EPSRC Studentships may be available for UK students. Overseas students must be self-funded.
